Chase took a deep breath and picked up his cell phone. He eyed the box of kittens on the table and looked up Cameron's number, hitting the send button with his thumb once he found it. He counted the rings on the line and hoped that she'd pick up.

A small grin began to form on his face. "I found three kittens in the alley next to my apartment complex on my way home from work. I just got back from the vet--he said they're all healthy, but I can't keep all three of them."

He walked over to the box on the table and reached in to pet his new friends. "I was wondering if you were interested in taking them."

Cameron smiled beautifully and closed her eyes. This was so much easier than all those applications and while she felt about for those homeless cats... well, this was Chase and three deserted kittens didn't sound too good.

"Three? Where is the mother cat? You can't keep them all? How many can you keep? Did the vet worm them? Did you look at his facilities before he treated them? Did they get their first shots? How old are they?" she rushed out, grabbing her car keys off the key rack on the wall and dropping them into her purse.

"And when can I come meet them?"

Chase ran a hand through his hair, trying to remember everything she'd asked. At least this was reassurance that she'd take good care of them. "Yeah, there are three. The vet said they're seven or eight weeks old. They've been wormed and they got their first set of shots today, but they'll need some follow-up vaccinations in a few weeks. And he's a very good vet--I think he went to Cornell."

He watched the orange kitten play with the white one while the black kitten purred under his hand. "I didn't see the mother anywhere around--they were in a shoebox in the dumpster. I'm only allowed to have one pet in this apartment, so I'd need someone to take two of them. But you'd mentioned wanting more than one..." He paused, afraid that he was putting too much pressure on her; he didn't want her to feel obligated to take them, but he didn't want to end up sending them to a shelter.

"If you're interested, you can come over whenever you're ready. I mean, tonight would be great, but if you want to wait until tomorrow that's fine."

"Cornell, that isn't too bad," she said, examining her manicured fingernails. "Not too bad at all, actually. My landlord gave me special permission to have two. I think he feels sorry for me since I'm still single and never have company and always work." She laughed. As if that wasn't true. "If you see the mother, try to catch her. We can get her spayed so this doesn't happen again."

She grabbed up her purse and slung it over her shoulder. "Well, I'll see you in a few minutes, yeah? I'm going to come over and see them. Do you want me to pay you back for their shots and stuff?"

He was glad she wasn't here to see him roll his eyes--perhaps there was such a thing as caring too much. "It's no problem--the vet did it for free because I was rescuing them. I'll give you his card when you get here."

As the words left his mouth, he realized she'd never been to his apartment. "Do you need directions? It's the red building on the corner of Welch Avenue and St. Claire, number 258."

Cameron tried to walk away from the counter, but the cord snapped and she froze. "Hello?" When Chase sighed into the phone, she sighed too, thankful he was still there.

She turned, scurrying to find a pen and wrote the address on the palm of her hand. "Thanks. Great. See you in a minute," she said breathlessly, hanging up her phone.

As he hung up the phone he turned to the kittens. "Guess what, you guys! I found someone who wants you!" The three mewed in response. "Don't worry, she'll take great care of you."
